HISTORY:

The Mayflower is an important vessel in America's history, bringing the first pilgrims to our shores in the 17th century. Used as a cargo ship for more than 11 years to transport English goods (cloth, furs, iron, & pewter goods) to France and Spain, it would later return laden with wines from France.

Enlisted in 1620 to transport the pilgrims to the New World, the small boat took on a harsh and difficult journey with more than 100 passengers and crew overloading it. The trip was rough and frightening, battered by storms and nearly lost time and time again. The conditions were miserable for the passengers - filthy, cold, and wet.

The journey took just over 2 months only to be nearly shipwrecked when trying to land where New York City sits. They instead landed in Massachusetts ill, out of provisions and fed up with the harsh life onboard and set up colonies. The Mayflower returned to England to do another cargo trip but it's condition had deteriorated and its owner became ill in 1621, so it travelled no more and legend has it that it was sold for scrap wood in 1624 for nearly nothing...
